The standard home, town house complex or apartment will typically have an electrically heated hot water tank (commonly called a geyser in South Africa) which function is to heat and store hot water at an average temperature of 60 degrees Centigrade. Most tanks (geysers) are designed for this temperature. A geyser is typically a tank manufactured from mild steel and coated inside with an enamel skin with the function of reducing corrosion over time. The geyser is also fitted with a sacrificial anode (made of an aluminium/magnesium alloy) Its purpose is to attract the sediment and corrosive elements so that these elements corrode the anode rather than the inside of your water heater or geyser, as it is more commonly known. In essence, an anode works to protect your water heater from corrosive elements that can damage your geyser and components. This sacrificing anode should be replaced at least every two years to prevent the water heater from corroding. As the geyser is under pressure, it also has an important pressure release valve, called the temperature and pressure valve or safety valve. A heating element is inserted into the tank and switches on and off and certain temperature levels which is controlled by a thermostat. The geyser is insulated by a layer of polyurethane foam . This stainless-steel geyser thus carries a 10-year warranty. The WaterLite range of water heater component fitment ports are also stainless steel which also reduces damage risks when replacing components such as elements, thermostats and valves. With no anode, the risks associated with damaging ports because of corroded threads is completely removed.
These geysers, fully fitted, normally cost only some 15% more than the standard geyser yet have no maintenance cost and will last significantly longer than a mild steel geyser. Accounting for the anode changes, the Waterlite stainless steel geyser is actually cheaper after two anode changes have been paid for on the mild steel geyser.
